Why a lone House Republican is fighting a primary in Texas without Trump’s backing

Trump’s Endorsement Strategy: A Snub and a Show of Support

President Donald Trump has flexed his political influence ahead of the 2026 primaries by endorsing every House Republican seeking re-election—except for one notable omission: Rep. Dan Crenshaw. Among the numerous GOP lawmakers in Arkansas, North Carolina, and Texas who received Trump’s backing, Crenshaw stands out as the lone outlier. Compounding the intrigue, Crenshaw is facing a competitive primary challenge from Texas state Rep. Steve Toth, who argues that Crenshaw’s stances on foreign policy and immigration are misaligned with the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement.

Crenshaw vs. Toth: A Battle of Allegiances

The omission of Trump’s endorsement is particularly conspicuous given the former president’s influence over Republican primaries. Crenshaw, who has served four terms in Congress, is actively countering Toth’s challenge by significantly outspending him in campaign advertisements. His ads emphasize that “Crenshaw stands with Trump.” However, Trump’s lack of endorsement has brought into question Crenshaw’s loyalty to the MAGA movement, a criticism that Toth and his supporters have leveraged.

Crenshaw, a Navy SEAL veteran, has defended his conservative credentials by pointing to his staunch support for Trump’s immigration policies and his aggressive stance against Mexican drug cartels. Yet, his support for aiding Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia has put him at odds with some in his party, including Trump and other prominent conservative figures.

Historical Context and Conservative Credentials

Crenshaw first entered the national political scene in 2018, capturing attention through an open, safely Republican seat. His journey has not been without controversies and challenges to his conservative credentials. In 2020, Crenshaw joined over 100 House GOP colleagues endorsing a legal challenge to Joe Biden’s electoral victory but later voted to certify the election results, distancing himself from Trump’s false claims of a stolen election.

Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston, noted that “Rep. Crenshaw’s biggest break with the president is on foreign policy,” framing it as a significant “crack” in his relationship with the conservative base.

The Voter’s Perspective

Conversations with voters illustrate the divided sentiments within Crenshaw’s district. While some, like Magnolia resident Julie Jakubson, appreciate Crenshaw’s adherence to his principles, others, like Richard Burgoon from Montgomery, criticize him for not backing Trump “in a lot of different situations,” labeling him as “hot-headed.”

Conclusion: The Complex Dance of Political Endorsements

As the primary contest intensifies, the absence of Trump’s endorsement of Crenshaw underscores the complexities of today’s political landscape, where allegiance to the former president remains a central tenet in Republican primaries. While Crenshaw’s conservative record is robust, his nuanced positions on key issues like foreign policy and election integrity highlight the challenges of navigating the diverse expectations of the Republican base. As both sides vie for voter support, this race serves as a microcosm of the broader dynamics at play within the GOP.
