Trump’s Claims on China and Election Security Face Scrutiny
In a recent prime-time address, President Trump asserted that “The People’s Republic of China carried out what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history, resulting in China’s illicit acquisition of 220 million U.S. voter files.” This sweeping claim about foreign interference in U.S. elections was presented as a major threat to national security and election integrity.
Downplaying His Own Warning
However, when pressed repeatedly this week on whether he would confront Beijing directly about the alleged breach, Trump appeared to minimize the urgency of his own warning. He stated, “Well, we’re going to talk to them about it. It took place a long time ago. I think China is maybe a little bit different today than it was then. But, look, they’re — they do things and we do things to them. I’ll be honest. We do things to them too. It’s not a one-way street. But we’ll be talking to them, yes.”
Despite the president’s strong rhetoric, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the issue was not raised in his meeting with China’s foreign minister, indicating a lack of follow-through on Trump’s public statements.
Fact-Check: Intelligence Does Not Back Trump’s Claims
According to documents and intelligence released last week, the evidence does not support Trump’s assertion of a massive Chinese operation targeting U.S. election data. Declassified information shows that China accessed some publicly available voter data records, which are routinely released by most states and accessible to journalists and political parties, sometimes for a fee. There is no evidence that China engaged in the kind of illicit, large-scale data theft described by Trump.
Furthermore, a report prepared by the then director of national intelligence and given to Trump in January 2021 stated that China did not deploy interference efforts and only considered, but did not act on, influence operations. The president also claimed in his speech that China wanted him to lose, but internal intelligence community deliberations did not reach a consensus on this point.
Election Security and Misinformation Concerns
As Trump continues to raise concerns about election integrity, Democrats are warning about misinformation and potential threats to free and fair elections. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has urged Democrats to prepare for a range of scenarios, including possible federal agent involvement at polling places. Trump has not ruled out such measures, saying, “Well, I want to do whatever it takes to keep elections secure.”

Trump also highlighted the issue of noncitizens on voter rolls, referencing a case in New Jersey where over 6,000 noncitizens were accidentally registered and more than 400 reportedly voted. However, this number represents a very small fraction of total voters and would not have changed the outcome of the election. The administration has cited a Department of Homeland Security claim that 250,000 noncitizens were on voter rolls in four states, but officials have not substantiated how this figure was determined or how many actually cast ballots.
