Trump Endorses Colombia’s New Right-Wing President, Signals Closer U.S. Ties

In June, Donald Trump publicly endorsed Abelardo de la Espriella, then a candidate in Colombia’s presidential race, stating, “de la Espriella fights tirelessly for and loves his great country and people, just like I do for the United States of America.” This endorsement, as reported, marked a clear alignment between Trump and the rightward shift in Colombian politics.

Following de la Espriella’s narrow victory, Trump further demonstrated his support by sending a U.S. delegation—including acting Attorney General Todd Blanche—to the inauguration. This move underscored the Trump administration’s intention to strengthen ties with Colombia’s new leadership.

Observers noted that de la Espriella is among the latest in a wave of right-wing Latin American leaders championed by Trump. Analysts from the Heritage Foundation highlighted that there is “very little daylight between the United States and Colombia under these two leaders,” suggesting that Trump’s administration is actively seeking closer cooperation with conservative governments in the region.

The Trump administration’s engagement is expected to have significant influence on Colombia’s direction, particularly regarding security and anti-narcotics efforts. Human rights advocates, however, have raised concerns about the potential consequences of a hardline approach, citing past increases in extrajudicial killings and disproportionate impacts on rural and minority communities.

Trump’s endorsement and subsequent actions signal a new era of U.S.-Colombia relations, with the administration’s expectations likely to shape policy decisions in Bogotá. As Colombia pivots to the right, the Trump White House’s support for de la Espriella is poised to play a central role in the country’s evolving political landscape.
