President Donald Trump is positioning himself as the central figure at next week’s GOP convention in Dallas, envisioning a televised event designed to energize Republican candidates and donors just two months before Election Day. Trump will headline the convention, aiming to showcase his influence over the party and its agenda.
However, the event—dubbed “Trump-a-palooza” by some within GOP circles—has exposed divisions within the party. According to a POLITICO survey of more than 70 Republican candidates and members, most do not plan to attend or are undecided, with many citing prior commitments, personal conflicts, or concerns about the high cost of attendance. Notably, some Republicans in competitive races are avoiding the convention, wary of being closely associated with the polarizing president so close to the election.
Trump’s prominent role at the convention comes at a time when some Republicans are privately concerned about his declining approval ratings in their districts, particularly amid ongoing international conflicts, trade disputes, and rising prices. The administration’s recent moves, such as a beef import deal intended to address affordability, have also sparked frustration among key GOP constituencies.
Despite these concerns, the Republican National Committee is promoting the event as a major fundraising opportunity and a rally for Trump’s “America First” agenda, which they claim has delivered lower drug prices, lower taxes, and a secure border. Yet, the steep $25,000 minimum donation required for lawmakers to attend has deterred even some who might benefit from Trump’s support.
The convention’s mixed reception underscores the challenges facing the GOP as it navigates Trump’s continued dominance and the reluctance of some members to embrace him publicly. As the party heads into the final stretch before the midterms, the Dallas convention will serve as a test of Trump’s ability to unify Republicans and drive voter enthusiasm—or highlight the divisions that persist within the party.
