Trump Misleads on Inflation Drop, Ignores Broader Economic Context

President Donald Trump has repeatedly touted a recent drop in inflation, claiming in speeches that “inflation is dropping at the fastest rate in more than six years” and that it is “way down” from when he took office. However, a closer look at official data and economic context reveals that these claims are misleading.

What Trump Said

At a Michigan rally on July 27, Trump stated, “And it was just announced that inflation is dropping at the fastest rate in more than six years. We’re dropping it. You know, I inherited this mess.” He made similar remarks at the Environmental Protection Agency on July 23, asserting, “We inherited the worst inflation in the history of America from the Biden administration. And as you know, last week, it was announced that inflation is way down. It’s down more than it’s been in over six years.” In Georgia the day before, he again claimed, “Inflation is way down. We’re coming way down. And last week, it was announced just last week that inflation dropped by the largest amount in more than six years, because we’re doing it right. We’re running the country properly.”

The Facts

It is true that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for All Urban Consumers decreased by 0.4% in June, the largest one-month drop since April 2020. This decline followed several months of increases driven by surging oil and gasoline prices due to the war with Iran. When a ceasefire temporarily eased energy prices in June, inflation fell sharply.

However, Trump’s broader claim that inflation is now “way down” from when he took office is inaccurate. The annualized inflation rate in June was 3.5%, higher than the 3.0% rate in January 2025 when Trump became president. While inflation had peaked at 9.1% in June 2022 under President Joe Biden, it had already dropped significantly before Trump’s term began, reaching 2.4% for the 12 months ending in February 2025.

Moreover, experts note that energy prices are highly volatile and largely responsible for the recent drop. As fighting with Iran resumed in July, oil and gasoline prices began rising again, likely pushing inflation back up. The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland projected only a minimal monthly increase in July, not another decrease.

Misleading Claims

Trump’s assertion that he “inherited the worst inflation in the history of America” is also false. Although inflation was high when he took office, it was not at a historic peak and had already been declining.

Additionally, while Trump’s focus on the sharp one-month drop in June is technically correct, it omits the context of previous increases and the likelihood of future volatility. Underlying “core” inflation, which excludes food and energy, remained at 2.6% in June—down from 2.9% in May but not dramatically lower than the 3.3% rate Trump inherited.

Conclusion

President Trump’s recent statements about inflation present a distorted picture of the current economic situation. While he accurately cited a notable one-month drop, his claims that inflation is “way down” from when he took office and that he inherited the “worst inflation in the history of America” are misleading. The reality is more nuanced, with inflation rates still above where they stood at the start of his term and energy-driven volatility likely to continue affecting the numbers.
