President Trump Downplays Iran Conflict as U.S. Launches Airstrikes and Revokes Oil Waiver

President Trump has downplayed the escalating conflict with Iran, describing recent military actions as “not even a war,” but rather “a military operation” and “a denuclearization.” This statement came as the United States carried out airstrikes against more than 80 Iranian targets on Tuesday, following attacks on three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz that the Pentagon attributed to Iran.

Trump’s comments, made during a meeting with NATO leaders in Ankara, Turkey, sought to minimize the severity of the situation. Despite his characterization, the U.S. response was significant, targeting Iranian air defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities, and over 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats. The strikes were approved and ordered by Trump while he attended the NATO summit, according to a U.S. official.

The U.S. also revoked a waiver that had allowed Iran to sell oil on the global market, further tightening economic pressure. The waiver had been intended as an incentive for Iran to adhere to a preliminary peace accord, but its removal came just 60 days into what Trump had prematurely celebrated as a peace agreement.

Trump’s approach to the conflict has been marked by a tendency to downplay its gravity, even as the region faces renewed instability and the risk of broader violence. His administration’s actions—both militarily and economically—have complicated ongoing negotiations with Iran, which are now paused following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

As the situation develops, Trump’s public minimization of the conflict stands in contrast to the scale of the U.S. military response and the potential for further escalation in the region. The president’s statements and decisions continue to shape the fragile dynamics between Washington and Tehran, with global energy supplies and regional security hanging in the balance.
